Helping Hand.....Meet the Volunteers helping make a difference
There are four stations of the road-show that were delivered by the Jets professional
players and coaching staff in to two schools local to Carlyle Finances head office. These
stations included the benefits of healthy eating, fitness, basketball skills and the dangers of
smoking.
Astonishingly, World Health Organisation found that most smokers begin using tobacco
products well before the age of 18 years. However, they suggest that physically active
children are more likely to adopt other healthy behaviours and avoid smoking, so it is
important to encourage them try different sports.
Peer pressure is thought to play a significant role in children and adolescents, particularly
with pressures such as trying a cigarette. The latest Cancer Research figures show that by
the age of 15 years, 15% of children in England and Wales report being regular smokers.
They state,
"The adolescent years are extremely important in establishing an individual's lifetime
smoking or non-smoking behaviour".
Rachel Sharp, Marketing Executive at Carlyle Finance says,
"While these figures from Cancer Research are worrying we hope that by introducing the
Cheshire Jets team and in particular the Jets players to the children, that the children are
more likely to listen to the information presented to them. Jets player Matthew Schneck
joined the Carlyle team over the two days of delivery. You could see that the children not
only looked up to Matt as a professional sportsman but also as a role model. If your role
model says smoking isn't 'cool', you are more likely to listen and overcome peer pressure".
Having now visited over 100 schools to deliver Hoops4Health across Cheshire, look out for
the Cheshire Jets and Carlyle Finance as they could be coming to a school near you!
